WITH CASES numbering more than 59,000 across 110 countries, Margaret Chan of the World Health Organization has declared a swine flu pandemic. "The world is moving into the early days of its first influenza pandemic in the 21st century," Dr. Chan said from Geneva, where she is the WHO's director general. "The virus is now unstoppable." Chilling words, but no cause for panic.

US health officials estimate that at least one million Americans have been infected with swine flu since the H1N1 virus emerged nearly three months ago.


The number is far higher than cases actually reported to the authorities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said many cases were mild, although 127 people had died. The CDC based its figures on surveys, rather than laboratory evidence, but the numbers suggest the death rate from swine flu is lower than thought. "We're saying that there have been at least a million cases of the new H1N1 virus so far this year in the United States," said Anne Schuchat of the CDC. "Reported cases are really just the tip of the iceberg."

CDC: Flu activity picks up pace, hits summer camps

Jun 26, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – An official from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today that the nation just saw its largest weekly increase in cases since the beginning of the novel flu outbreak and that the virus has so far been detected at 34 summer camps in 16 states.

Anne Schuchat, MD, interim deputy director for the CDC's science and public health program, told reporters, "The key point is that this new infectious disease is not going away." Arizona: Camps Canceled by Flu Fears

Thousands of children with muscular dystrophy will not be going to summer camp this year because of the swine flu. The Muscular Dystrophy Association, based in Tucson, said it was canceling the remainder of its summer camps because swine flu had been reported in them. The association said children with muscular dystrophy were particularly at risk from the flu, although none of the children recently sickened after attending camp have died. About 1,800 children have attended this year, but another 2,500 set to go in 35 states will be affected by the cancellations.

Health experts note that face masks and respirators should be used along with other precautions, such as frequent hand-washing, covering coughs, staying at home if ill and avoiding crowds.

In Mexico, one taxi cab driver said his business has dropped by 50 percent since the flu hit. “People don’t even want to leave their houses. It was bad enough with the economic situation, and now it’s even worse” (Bloomberg).
